Police can confirm one person has died following a fatal crash on State Highway 1 near Mata, in the Whangārei District this afternoon.
The two-vehicle crash, between Totara Road and Hewlett Road was reported to Police at around 2.33pm.
Sadly, one person received critical injuries and died at the scene.
Police extend our condolences to their family and friends at this time.
A second person received serious injuries and has been transported to hospital.
State Highway 1 is closed in both directions, and motorists are advised to expect delays, or to avoid the area if possible.
Diversions are in place between Springfield Road and Salmon Road.
The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.
