Flames were seen coming out of a Boeing 737 shortly after it departed from Queenstown on Monday evening.
The Virgin Australia flight VA148, carrying 67 passengers and six crew, experienced an issue, potentially a bird strike, just after takeoff.
The aircraft was diverted to Invercargill Airport, where it landed safely shortly before 7 pm. Emergency services were on standby as the plane touched down, and no injuries were reported.
Witnesses on the ground captured the dramatic event, with some describing the sound as similar to a car backfiring and seeing flames shooting from the plane’s engine. The incident drew residents of Shotover Country out of their homes, many of whom felt helpless and concerned for those on board.

After all, many Boeing KC-135’s are still flying 68 years on, and the B-52’s will go past 100 years per DOD expenditure forecast.
The Russian comparison is the TU-95 Bear Bomber, which will still be flying for another 40 years.
It’s the manufacturing culture and using materials to save costs that have no place on an airframe that has
changed, and not for the better.
But still, I remember when the DC-10’s had bad compressor blades that cracked and separated, (UAL Flight 232…) until military grade blades were installed.
