Southern Police are disappointed with motorists after issuing many infringement notices where drivers were found to be displaying dangerous driving behaviours and driving over the posted speed limit.
‘A concerning number of motorists received an infringement notice as they were seen to be travelling more than 20km/h above the speed limit on roads surrounding Cromwell, Ōmarama, Twizel, and Queenstown,’ says Inspector Craig Brown.
One motorist was seen to be driving on the wrong side of the road, and had their vehicle impounded. They were summonsed for dangerous driving.
Three motorists had their drivers’ licences suspended and another person had their vehicle impounded for driving almost double the speed limit.
‘It is incredibly frustrating that we are catching so many drivers who are not only risking their own lives, but also those of other road users.
‘Some of the speeds have been horrendous and coupled with winter conditions with ice and snow on the roads it is dangerous for all users.
‘Our key message is that we want our motorists and visitors coming into Southern District to get home safely. Motorists need to take extra care and drive to the conditions. Extra time should be allowed when planning journeys to allow for unexpected delays that may occur due to the conditions.
‘We will continue to target speed and dangerous driving behaviour and we will take enforcement action.
‘Expect to see us on the road anywhere at any time.’
If speed limits weren’t set at 30km/h, fewer people would exceed them 🤷🏼♂️
Yep, bizarre speed limits all over the country. 80km/h (previously 100km/h) on perfectly wide and straight, stretches of road, plus bizarrely low inner city speed limits.
I guess too many people were sticking to the law so lets lower speed limits, bleat that the public are not adhering to speed laws and use this as a pretest to fine them.
The old cops, like their politician masters, aren’t too convincing anymore…
Frankly, I and just so many are disappointed in the police.
When the police are caught out lying in court, little or nothing serious gets done about it.
I have seen this happen to my loved ones.
The police are supposed to protect the public even from their own staff when wrong is done.
I feel glad when police are beaten or killed. Sadly, that is the price of seeing corrupt police personal and doing little or nothing about it.
I view it as retribution on the police person’s family for the damage done to mine.
A few years ago, I was stopped by a Police car. I was surprised and I got out of my car and assumed that he stopped me because something had fallen off the back of my car: I thought the number plate or bumper was dangling off. Of course, my car was fine.
The Police officer accused me of doing 70kph in a 60kph zone. I told him that I was doing 60 and was absolutely sure about it. He went back to his car, and I assumed looked at video. When he came back to my car said that he thought his radar had in fact caught another car going 70kph on the opposite lane. The officer had been waiting on the opposite side of a carriageway and in fact measured the speed of someone on the same side of the road as himself, not me.
I knew that I was doing 60kph. What would happen with somebody that is more emotionally pliable or vulnerable than myself or that was not paying attention to the speed that they are doing at that moment?
Now I have a front and rear camera installed where GPS speed is also on the video.
While on this subject, how about the new NZ government put back to what they were, some of the lowered speed limits under Labor. Some of these limits are stupidly slow – dual carriageway with 60kph limit, for example, that was previously 80kph.
