In an exclusive interview with the Washington Examiner, former President Donald Trump revealed that he has completely rewritten his upcoming convention speech in response to the recent assassination attempt against him.
Trump, who was shot by a sniper at a rally in Pennsylvania, told the media outlet of his desire to use this historic moment to call for national unity.
Originally planned as a critical address targeting President Joe Biden’s policies, the speech will now focus on bringing the country together. Trump acknowledged the attack had dramatically changed the election campaign and was thankful for the widespread support he received from people across various political backgrounds.
The former president credited his survival to a momentary turn away from the crowd during his speech.
‘I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?’
As he prepared to leave for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he described his speech as one that will meet ‘the demands of history’, while aiming to unify the nation.
‘This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,’ he said.
Trump praised the bravery of his supporters, particularly highlighting Corey Comperatore, the former fire chief killed in the attack, and others who were injured.
