In a concerning development Auckland police recently paid a nighttime visit to a local man to discuss posts made on his anonymous social media account, despite no crime having been committed.
The unexpected visit has been described as an attempt to investigate “a thought crime.” Video of the exchange was posted on X by citizen photojournalist @SimonRAnderson, and shared widely across social media.
The police explained that they were there to “get some context” regarding the man’s online comments, which had been reported to the Firearms Safety Authority.
Despite assuring the man that the conversation was “100% voluntary,” the officers admitted that the posts could “potentially jeopardise” his firearms licence. Police insisted that they were not there to take legal action but to ensure that the man was still a “fit and proper person” under the Arms Act.
Recalling a previous negative experience with police the man said he did not trust them.
“So someone’s made a complaint to police about my anonymous account, which makes jokes. And you guys have tracked that anonymous account to me?”
“It’s not really a complaint as such. It’s more alerting us to the fact that this is the sort of thing you are posting online… outside people don’t know that you’re joking… in the future people are likely to say ‘hey, that’s quite concerning’, which is why we’re here, to come and find out if that is the case or not. And we’re just here to have a chat about that, to get the context around it.”
“Yeah I don’t think this is voluntary. I would like to have all my chats with police with a lawyer present. I don’t feel comfortable talking to you guys… and I don’t feel comfortable you’ve tracked me down over these comments, unless there’s a legal right, you guys should be acting on the law.”
The X account in question @Knobb_Oddy has since been taken down.
At 18:30 last night police tracked the supposedly anonymous user account Knob Oddy to a chap in Auckland who may or may not be the operator.

The Police used his firearms license as leverage (fit and proper, dont engage in anything extreme) all they need to do is introduce this language into drivers license’s, bank accounts, (social credit system) to control peoples language, free speech is a ‘privilege’ not a ‘right’.
Using the threat of removing the Firearms Licence would be a catalyst for the targeted victim to get a lawyer and sue the police, as the other certifications and licences are next in line.

I respect the guy’s decision to close the account and keep his family safe, but this kind of stuff should be pushed back against loudly (no matter how passive-aggressively they “just wanna have a chat”).
I know it’s the 2020’s and creeping authoritarianism is so in style these days, but government intimidation and coercion of any kind are supposed to be forbidden in “free and open democracies” like ours.
