Bipartisan support for changes to Genetic Engineering laws a possibility – report

Genetic engineering news

The government plans to overhaul the country’s genetic engineering laws by scrapping the effective ban on gene editing by the end of next year.

The proposed legislation is modelled on Australia’s and aims to relax existing restrictions and establish a regulatory body.

Labour and the Greens have not ruled out support for the changes, are urging caution.

Labour’s Deborah Russell told state media there was a need for public education and careful consideration due to New Zealand’s GMO-free reputation. The Greens’ Steve Abel called for a detailed discussion, expressing concerns over potential risks and advocating for a precautionary approach.

Technology Minister Judith Collins welcomed the possibility of bipartisan support, pointing to the evolving science of genetic modification, while Luxon claims it’s time to “trust the advancements” made in this field, dismissing earlier fears as “outdated.”
