Watch: ‘How can you sleep at night?’ – Aussie shopper confronts Woolworths CEO in supermarket aisle over ‘price-gouging’

A heated exchange occurred between a frustrated shopper and Woolworths’ new CEO, Amanda Bardwell, during her visit to a Wollongong store.

The shopper accused the supermarket giant of price gouging during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, questioning how Bardwell could “sleep at night” knowing that Australians are struggling financially. The confrontation, captured on video and shared online, highlighted growing frustrations as the shopper claimed Woolworths was profiting while Aussies suffered.

Bardwell maintained that the company is doing “everything possible” to offer great prices, but the shopper remained unconvinced, pointing to the supermarket’s significant profits.

The incident has fuelled a broader conversation about supermarket practices, especially as Woolworths and Coles face legal action from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for allegedly misleading consumers with fake discounts.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also criticised major supermarkets for treating customers “as fools,” advocating for stronger consumer protections amid rising grocery prices.

Woolworths, while acknowledging the ACCC’s actions, promised to review the allegations and reiterated its commitment to “helping consumers save” through its various promotions and reward programmes.
