Chinese immigrant avoids deportation after violent outburst over husband’s affair

Donglan Wu, a Chinese immigrant living in New Zealand, has avoided deportation after a violent attack on her ex-husband’s partner following the breakdown of her marriage.

Wu, who had arrived in New Zealand hoping for a better life, was devastated when her husband had an affair, leaving her emotionally shattered and living in her car.

In a moment of rage in 2021, she stabbed her ex-husband’s partner, causing serious injuries. Wu was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for the attack, but successfully appealed against deportation on humanitarian grounds.

Wu’s appeal highlighted her fragile mental health, worsened by years of domestic abuse, powerlessness in her marriage, and isolation.

The Immigration and Protection Tribunal noted that Wu had no support network in China, with her family being poor and aging, and her criminal record making it difficult for her to find employment. The tribunal characterised the attack as an isolated incident driven by extreme psychological stress and granted Wu a five-year suspension of her deportation order, provided she does not reoffend.

Wu expressed deep remorse for her actions, acknowledging the pain she caused, and said she would regret the incident for the rest of her life. With supportive friends and a church community in New Zealand, Wu hopes to rebuild her life and restore her relationship with her son after her release from custody in 2026.

The tribunal concluded that deporting her would be unduly harsh and contrary to her humanitarian needs, given her low risk of reoffending.

  1. The Chinese are already accusing NZ of discriminating and harassing ‘Chinese People’.

The woman will stay in NZ, as she is needed here for the Police and Corrections to have job security in dealing with her and people like her, especially when she stabs her next ‘victim’…
China would prefer that she stays here in order to relieve them of the liability.
No doubt her abusive adultering partner / husband is probably a caucasian, probably now hanging out with a Philippina..!
