Australia has waived diplomatic immunity for the partner of an Australian diplomat accused of a ‘homophobic’ outburst’ and assault in Wellington’s central business district.
The incident occurred on September 29, shortly after the All Blacks vs. Wallabies Bledisloe Cup match, when the man was involved in an altercation on Dixon Street.
Video footage captured the man shouting slurs and claiming diplomatic immunity while being restrained by police.
In the video, a man was heard shouting, “You f***ing stupid f*****! I’ve got diplomatic immunity! You f**k!” as three police officers restrained him against a wall.
New Zealand Police sought a waiver from Australian authorities to proceed with charges, and Australia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has now confirmed that the immunity has been waived, allowing the investigation to continue.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs both emphasized that diplomats and their dependents are expected to respect the laws of their host countries.
While the investigation remains ongoing, the video evidence and witness statements suggest the man became aggressive during the altercation, reportedly shouting at bystanders and police officers. Further steps will now be taken by New Zealand Police following the waiver of immunity.

Sounds like a melt down, guess a bit of a slap in the face should do the trick. Hardly think that shouting slurs is extreme violence however he should know better, being a partner to a diplomat you’d think he’d have some manners and show a bit of respect.
Seems like a few people that work in the Australian High Commision have diplomatic immunity including their male partners. 7 in fact. It’s not the husband of the High Commissioner either.
