Record-breaking early voter turnout in Georgia

Early voting in Georgia, a key battleground state for the upcoming US presidential election, began with record turnout on Tuesday local time.

Over 328,000 ballots were cast on the first day, more than double the number from 2020, according to Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s top election official.

As early voting opens across several states this week, Georgia’s big numbers highlights its critical role in the election outcome.

Republican candidate Donald Trump, who lost Georgia in 2020, was optimistic about the early vote turnout, while nationwide figures have been more subdued compared to 2020.

Analysts at Election Lab estimate that only 5.5 million Americans have so far cast their ballots, down from the 27 million recorded at this point in the 2020 election.
