New York City’s Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the prime suspect in the targeted murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione was apprehended in Pennsylvania after a McDonald’s employee recognised him from widely circulated NYPD photos.
Found in his possession were firearms, fake IDs, and a suppressor matching the weapon used in the shooting.
A handwritten manifesto was also recovered, expressing anti-corporate sentiments and admitting sole responsibility for the act.
Mangione, a Maryland native with no prior New York arrests, used a ghost gun—a self-assembled, untraceable firearm potentially 3D printed—for the crime. NYPD detectives are en route to Pennsylvania for further investigation.
The manifesto, described as deeply critical of the healthcare industry, contained phrases suggesting violence as retribution against corporate America.
Police found no direct threats to other individuals.
Tisch said Mangione appeared to act alone and had no apparent plans to flee the country.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny highlighted the public’s role in the arrest, crediting the McDonald’s employee for alerting authorities.
Ballistics testing and further analysis of Mangione’s ghost gun are underway as police piece together the full extent of his actions and motivations.
