Public outrage erupts over Newstalk ZB’s inflammatory “White Vigilantism” headline

Legacy media outlet Newstalk ZB faced widespread backlash after publishing a controversial article titled “Man Acquitted After Killing Homeless Man in Moment of White Vigilantism” in response to the not-guilty verdict in the Daniel Penny trial in New York.

The headline, which appears to have been directly cut and pasted from an AFP article, has been widely condemned as misleading, inflammatory, and an example of race-baiting. The article appears to have been removed from the Newstalk ZB website, but public criticism continues to mount. Legacy media press agency AFP also appears to have removed it.

The article referred to Daniel Penny, a 26-year-old former U.S. Marine who was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man. Penny’s defense argued that his actions in placing Neely in a ‘chokehold’ were in self-defense during a confrontation on a subway train during which Neely had also threatened to kill other passengers. Critics of the article noted that the “white vigilantism” framing was not only factually inaccurate fake news but also a blatant attempt to inject racial bias and division into the story.

Social media platforms, particularly X, erupted with criticism. One user wrote, “Dear @NewstalkZB – your ‘white vigilantism’ headline is inaccurate and inflammatory. Do yourselves a favour (and your listeners/readers) and take it down.”

Others labelled the headline as “appalling” and “disgraceful misinformation,” accusing Newstalk ZB of undermining public trust in journalism. Another user quipped, *“This is why we don’t listen to them anymore.”*

The outrage extended beyond social media, with many accusing Newstalk ZB and its parent company, NZME, of perpetuating a divisive narrative. Some pointed out that this incident reflects broader concerns about media bias and the rapid erosion of trust in mainstream outlets.

Potential employee shows up with a journalism degree and a portfolio of unbiased reporting.

The employer says “Don’t worry about those things, Can you cut and paste”?

  3. Interesting. DT et al. predictably commenting on MSM predictability. Circularity.
Why not simply ignore State funded MSM irrelevance?
