Wellington police have confirmed that two women were indecently assaulted by Vietnamese officials visiting New Zealand on business.

The incidents are said to have happened at the Saigon on Willis restaurant in March 2024.

Despite identifying the suspects and gathering evidence, including witness testimonies and CCTV footage, police were unable to lay charges as the men had left New Zealand, and there is no extradition treaty with Vietnam.

Detective Inspector John Van Den Heuvel told state media the Vietnamese Embassy cooperated with the investigation, and a formal letter expressing police concerns was sent to the Vietnamese Ambassador via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Police assured the victims they pursued all possible investigative avenues and provided regular updates and support services.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon acknowledged the incident, clarifying that the officials were part of an independent delegation and not connected to the Vietnamese prime minister’s visit.

New Zealand police have since met with their Vietnamese counterparts to discuss potential actions.
