Funding increase for critical maritime rescue communication upgrades

Maritime safety news

The Government has announced a funding package to upgrade the communication networks for Maritime New Zealand and Coastguard New Zealand, aiming to enhance search and rescue operations across the country’s vast maritime zone.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown highlighted the importance of modernising the National Maritime Distress and Safety Communications Service (NMDSCS), which coordinates rescue efforts across expansive distances.

The updated system will meet international standards and improve traffic management on New Zealand’s increasingly busy waters, addressing safety concerns as the current system nears obsolescence.

In addition to the NMDSCS, the Coastguard’s Very High Frequency (VHF) maritime radio network will be replaced with modern infrastructure to meet the demands of growing recreational and commercial maritime activity.

Brown described the VHF network as a critical lifeline for vessels in distress, noting that outdated equipment could hinder rescue operations.
