US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are preparing to take a new American proposal aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict directly to Moscow and Kiev, President Donald Trump has announced.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump confirmed that the two negotiators would carry a plan intended to bring the war to a conclusion.
“They’re bringing with them a proposal to end the war,” Trump said, without disclosing the terms of the initiative or confirming when the missions would take place.
Reports that Witkoff and Kushner could make the long-anticipated trips in the coming days have circulated in several media outlets. Their separate visits to the Russian and Ukrainian capitals have been expected for months as the Trump administration attempts to revive stalled diplomacy.
Trump has sought to broker an agreement between Moscow and Kiev since returning to the White House last year. Earlier hopes of a breakthrough following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska ultimately failed to produce a settlement, with fundamental disagreements between Russia and Ukraine remaining unresolved.
Putin on Thursday spoke positively about the American negotiators, describing them as welcome visitors to Moscow following their involvement in talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States.
“Mr. Kushner and Witkoff are always welcome guests here, and we work with them with pleasure,” Putin said.
Both men have travelled to Moscow during Trump’s current term but have yet to visit Kiev. Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has publicly complained about the imbalance and has repeatedly suggested that a trip to the Ukrainian capital was approaching.
The renewed diplomatic push comes as Kiev continues seeking additional American military assistance. Ukraine has requested hundreds of Patriot interceptor missiles to strengthen its defences against Russian strikes, although US supplies have reportedly been constrained by other military commitments.
Meanwhile, fighting has continued to intensify. Ukraine launched a campaign of large-scale drone attacks against Russian shipping, refineries and commercial infrastructure in June. Russia subsequently carried out retaliatory strikes that have severely disrupted Ukrainian logistics and Black Sea maritime activity.
Witkoff and Kushner now appear set to become central figures in Trump’s latest attempt to bridge the substantial differences between Moscow and Kiev and secure a negotiated end to the conflict.
