President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday night in the Oval Office, officially withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO).
“This is a significant move,” Trump remarked moments before penning his signature. “We were contributing $500 million to the World Health Organization while I was in office, and I put an end to it.”
Explaining his decision, Trump continued, “It didn’t feel fair to me.”
This action echoes Trump’s initial attempt to sever ties with the WHO in 2020, a move that was later reversed by President Joe Biden on his first day in office in 2021.
According to the executive order, the decision to withdraw cites concerns over the WHO’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic, its response to other global health emergencies, and its failure to implement critical reforms.
The order also highlights perceived political influences from certain member states as a factor in the decision.
