The Ministry of Education has criticised Finlayson Park School in South Auckland for failing to alert authorities and parents after a 5-year-old girl wandered off the school grounds unnoticed.

The child, placed outside the classroom as a disciplinary measure, left through open gates and was later found walking with a stranger near a busy intersection.

Her mother happened to spot her and intervened.

The school has since installed a temporary fence and promised a full review, while the Ministry demanded that schools must ensure student safety and promptly notify parents in such incidents.
