Four-year Parliamentary Term Bill introduced

The coalition government has introduced legislation to extend the parliamentary term to four years, contingent on the outcome of a binding referendum.

The proposal, supported by National, ACT, and New Zealand First, includes a key condition from ACT: the extension would only take effect if select committees are structured to reflect the proportion of non-Executive MPs.

Otherwise, the term would remain at three years.

Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith stated the bill aligns with ACT’s draft Constitution Amendment Bill and will undergo public consultation through a select committee.

While the government has yet to decide on the bill’s future beyond committee stages, a referendum could potentially be held alongside the 2026 General Election.

  1. That scheming cartel!
Do they really think we want these sociopaths herding us for one year longer without the option to vote them out?

  2. We are all mandated to send our sons to war and die for democracy. Surely, if democracy is so crucial to kill our offspring, why not do this?

Mandate a referendum to dismiss a sitting government after 2 years.
Include binding referendums on public submissions that achieve more the 5%
Include mandatory referendums just like Sweden does.

We have realme logins so it shouldn’t be too hard to setup. Worried about security, privacy and stand over issues? Set up boots in malls, local authorities where people identify themselves and go into a cardboard booth.

Killing our kids for parliamentary to stay in power doesn’t work for me.
