Public interest campaign group NoMore Glyphosate NZ has accused the Ministry for the Environment of failing in its duty of oversight after revealing the agency has not sought a single piece of expert advice on glyphosate-based herbicides in more than five years.
In response to two Official Information Act requests submitted in July 2025, the Ministry admitted it had not commissioned or received any independent advice on glyphosate’s potential health or environmental impacts, nor had it considered risks to vulnerable groups such as rural workers.
The group criticised the Ministry’s inaction, contrasting it with international moves to restrict or phase out glyphosate following the World Health Organization’s 2015 classification of the herbicide as a “probable human carcinogen.”
Despite mounting global concern and litigation linking glyphosate to cancer, the Ministry pointed only to a single recent rat study — sent unsolicited — as the extent of its records.
NoMore Glyphosate NZ argues this lack of engagement reflects a systemic failure to monitor chemical risks and protect public health, warning that ignoring such issues has historically led to major public health crises.
The group is calling for independent expert reviews, transparency, and a proactive approach to chemical regulation.
Results from glyphosate tests in popular breakfast cereals
Independent testing funded by community donations has found glyphosate residues in five out of seven popular breakfast cereals sold in New Zealand, according NoMoreGlyphosate NZ. While none of the products exceeded legal limits, the group says the presence of the controversial herbicide and “probable human carcinogen” in everyday foods raises serious questions about safety standards.
Kellogg’s Special K showed the highest levels in the latest round of testing, which follows earlier investigations into honey and Weet-Bix. The group plans to continue its food testing initiative with supermarket bread next.

The push to increase allowable glyphosate levels coincides with the Gene Tech Bill for a specific reason: To produce GE crops that are highly resistant to glyphosate to handle the increase they are allowing. Public health was never a real consideration.

It is seldom too late to repent, atone and change course.
But many still do believe that historic ‘mandates’ still carry and protect them, that they will be supported forever by the mandate of the People. They still think that the sheeple are too apathetic to realize.
Well, I suggest to visit a market, a pub, a workshop, talk to the people. Ha, many can’t do that anymore without their secret service bodyguard detail.
You gotta be totally blind and deaf to be oblivious to the groundswell gearing into tsunami. However, once governance is abused it fails to exist by definition. Once government fails to execute power in order to protect the People, government becomes illegal.
Both red and blue governments have failed in many ways to act in the interest of the mandate of the People. To commit crimes by saying “we are elected” and then have these crimes covered by the mirror cheek governance we have now, makes them all culprits. The little changes of token policies do not cut it.
It is unbecoming to any society to jeopardize life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness of a large part of the citizenry, if they are aware of what is done to them and their children’s children or not. Citizens vote for a mandate to govern exactly because they are busy with their lifes. They are not experts and policy makers.
And what citizenry especially relies on is the adjudicative branch of government. Is surely looks like that branch has been also compromised and usurped.
This is not only about glyphosate. It is not even about politics. It is about a systemic breakdown of governance. It is about a systemic breakdown between a people and the governing bureaucratic autocratic echelons. These managers are NOT from the people. They have gained their status by climbing the corporate ladder. Their tricks of the trade are bringing down the country.
What that results in is the loss of public trust. It is about the reputation of anybody who thinks they are ‘in power’. This has far-reaching consequences. And is very dangerous.
It is destroying the fabric of society, law and order, and civility.
If there is not a radical turn-around in governance NOW, one does not need to be a clairvoyant to see what’s coming, what has always come, when increasing numbers of people realize what’s been done to them.
I don’t know how stooges sleep at night, but their waking up call might be very different one day.
I don’t know how stooges do not see the writing on the wall, but one day they will decipher public sentiment.
I don’t know how this will pan out, but I am already in mourning for our country.
I am not sorry for my long rant because it isn’t.

Increasing glyphosate or other poisons in our food seems worse than the toxic covid jabs a few years back which first brought me into the “freedom movement” because it is being sneaked in without our knowledge. I’m going to ask every seller at farmers markets tomorrow to identify for me which of their foods is glyphosate-free. I am also curious whether organic certification guarantees the food is free of glyphosate contamination.
Now that the environment is so polluted & saturated with glyphosate & 100’s of other chemicals, nobody can guarantee that their produce is 100% organic, but al least you know it hasn’t been used on the property where it is grown or produced & that the whole chain is free of most harmful chemicals & food additives etc etc… Also it won’t be GMO’d or contain GMO ingredients. That the best anyone can do until a REAL effort is made to clean up our environment & address actual pollution issues.
They allow a small amount in various products. Problem is people eating a bunch of small amounts add up.
Utterly irresponsible but then that’s what government in New Zealand has increasingly, become.
