Corrections staff are managing a riot at Waikato’s Spring Hill Prison, where 10 inmates have refused to leave the exercise yard and damaged property, according to Commissioner of Custodial Services Leigh Marsh.
The prison has been locked down as a precaution, with the incident contained to the yard and no threat to the public.
Prisoners lit several small fires, prompting a major Fire and Emergency response, including five trucks, two tankers, a ladder truck, and a command unit.
No staff injuries have been reported, but St John is on site, and specialist control teams are ready to assist. Police were notified of the disorder and are supporting the response.
Ihumane conditions, that’s typically what sparks these kinds of things?
