Maritime emergency exercise planned off Taranaki coast

A multi-agency maritime emergency training exercise will be carried out off the Taranaki coast on Sunday 14 December, with activity expected between Port Taranaki and the Bell Block area.

The controlled exercise will involve Police and ‘partner emergency services’ working together to test and strengthen their coordination and response capabilities during simulated maritime incidents. Rescue vessels will be operating in the area as part of the scenario.

Taranaki Search and Rescue Coordinator and Public Team Supervisor Wade Callander said members of the public may notice unusual activity during the exercise, including smoke markers, objects placed in the water and life rafts.

He said the planned operation is designed to ensure agencies are prepared to respond effectively should a real emergency occur.

“These exercises allow Police and our partner agencies to test systems and procedures in a realistic environment,” Callander said.

Boaties and other marine users are being advised to proceed with caution during the exercise and to follow any instructions given by authorities.
