Yemen’s Saudi-backed president in exile steps down.
Having failed to stay in power over the course of a seven-year-long civil war, Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi has resigned, handing full authority to an eight-member council led by the country’s former interior minister, Rashad al-Alimi.
“I irreversibly delegate to the Presidential Leadership Council my full powers, in accordance with the constitution and the Gulf Initiative and its executive mechanism,” Yemen’s former leader declared on Thursday.
He added that the country is now entering a “transition period,” during which the Council will have to negotiate a final political solution with the Houthi rebels.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both major stakeholders in the Yemen conflict, have welcomed the transition of power and announced their decision to allocate $3 billion to support Yemen’s economy. Additionally, Riyadh will spend $300 million to fund the UN-initiated humanitarian response plan aiming to “alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.”
The announcement comes days after the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels agreed to maintain an UN-brokered ceasefire. The truce coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. All hostilities, including on the ground, air, and sea, have been suspended since Saturday.
Yemen’s civil war broke out in January 2015, when armed Houthi rebels toppled Hadi’s government, forcing the president to flee to Saudi Arabia. Still recognized by the global community, Hadi has attempted to regain power by resorting to foreign aid. The Saudi-led coalition, backed by the US and the UK, has extensively bombed the war-torn nation. An estimated 233,000 people have lost their lives in this conflict. Yemen’s war has been accompanied by what the UN labeled as “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” with 20 million people suffering from hunger and malnutrition.
It is not only the Saudis and US/UK arms suppliers inherit the karma of the death of 233,000 people but also the legacy media mostly ignoring the Yemen’s civil war situation. How these MSM liars sleep at night????????
Yet no calls to stand with Yemen in all that time, 233000 people dead and 20 million suffering and the silence from the west was and is deafening. Why the Ukraine and not Yemen or Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria etc etc etc.
Saudi membership in UN human rights council is retained but they just suspended Russia based on the fake or unverified Bucha claims. If Russia asks for UN security council to investigate the Bucha claims UK vitoed it twice. All the MSM is on full throttle on this story as well as Biden and other politicians. We just live in an empire of lies.
Totally agree, its farcical. Its a shame not many people are prepared to look outside the MSM to be informed. Mayor of Bucha never mentioned casualties at all, those atrocities occurred long after the Russians had left town, video evidence corroborates this. Empire of lies is correct, the entire Western world is now full of fascist leaders supporting a neo-nazi war effort in the Ukraine, and yet they have the nerve to call Putin a Nazi. The majority swallow it, hook, line, and sinker. Most empires go through specific stages from bondage to spiritual and physical courage which leads to freedom that makes way for abundance, which then makes a bed for moral decadence brought on by complacency which leads to apathy and then dependence, which is short hop and skip back to bondage. I think the west is now in the apathetic stage leading up to dependence. And dependence is where we are heading, especially when the majority of the the rest of the world wakes up to western hegemony/fascism. I think that awakening is occurring now.
It’s because none of the elites have lucrative “investment” deals or executive board positions for their children in that country. No money to be made in a desert.
So “our values” apparently don’t need to apply there ????
2nd attempt. @ unquaccinated – the intense political focus on Ukraine & $US flowing in turned that country into el dorado for political grifters & hangers-on – the corruption rides in the coat-tails of the geopolitics
