Amy Maynard, a part-time teacher from Hamilton, clinched the prestigious NZ Gold Guitar Award with a heartfelt performance of “Whakaaria Mai (How Great Thou Art)” at the Gore Town and Country Stadium.

Dedicating her song to her father, David Thompson, Maynard’s rendition in the gospel section captivated the audience and judges. Overcome with emotion, she expressed that the song symbolised inclusivity, blending her love for te ao Māori, country music, and gospel.

Maynard’s win earns her a trip to the Tamworth Country Music Festival in Australia. Grateful for her sister’s support in selecting her winning songs, Maynard also secured awards in the gospel and New Zealand song sections.
