Study finds rise in shingles risk after Covid boosters

Scientists from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands have identified an increase in shingles cases following Covid jabs, particularly after ‘boosters’.

Analysing electronic health records from more than two million vaccinated individuals, researchers found a seven percent rise in shingles (herpes zoster) diagnoses within 28 days of receiving the mRNA gene therapy overall, increasing to 21 percent after a third mRNA booster.

Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which lies dormant after childhood chickenpox.

The study suggests Covid jabs may reduce certain immune cells, allowing the virus to resurface in some people. A higher risk was also observed among men receiving vector-based vaccines.

Researchers stressed the increase was modest, short-lived, and mainly affected specific subgroups, with most cases managed in primary care. The findings do not prove causation and contrast with some US data showing no elevated risk. The research appears amid reports that the Food and Drug Administration is considering stronger vaccine warning labels.
