EMF pollution: A growing threat to human health, warns expert after ‘systematic review’

EMF pollution news

A growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from modern technology could have significant biological and health effects, according to a recent systematic review and insights from a leading EMF expert.

Dr. Larry Burk, a retired Duke MRI radiologist and long-time researcher in EMF safety, has sounded the alarm on the dangers posed by EMFs from 5G, Wi-Fi, and wireless devices. Drawing on his 35 years of experience and role on the North Carolina Radiation Protection Commission’s Non-Ionizing Advisory Committee, Dr. Burk highlights the pressing need to reduce EMF exposure in daily life.

A systematic review conducted by Sahu et al. further underscores these concerns. The study reviewed 20 peer-reviewed articles published between 2009 and 2019, examining the biological effects of EMF exposure on human health.

Key findings:

  • EMF exposure has been linked to a range of health issues, including anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).
  • Other reported effects include electromagnetic hypersensitivity, infertility, and an increased risk of various cancers.
  • The review emphasised that EMFs, emitted by devices like mobile phones, microwave ovens, and power transmission systems, disrupt cellular functions at the micro-level, potentially causing long-term harm.

The authors of the review urged the adoption of preventive measures to limit EMF exposure, particularly in occupational settings. Dr. Burk concurs, advocating for practical solutions such as minimizing wireless device usage, opting for wired connections where possible, and using shielding technologies to reduce EMF exposure.

As technological advances continue to proliferate, the global prevalence of EMF exposure is growing exponentially. From mobile phone towers to household appliances, EMFs are an inescapable part of modern life. However, experts like Dr. Burk stress that greater awareness and precautionary measures could mitigate these risks.

“Reducing EMF exposure is not about rejecting technology—it’s about using it wisely and safely,” says Dr. Burk.

To protect yourself and your loved ones, experts recommend simple steps such as limiting screen time, avoiding keeping wireless devices close to the body, and ensuring proper ventilation around electronic devices to minimise exposure.
