A new peer-reviewed study published in Neurotoxicology has raised fresh concerns over the safety of everyday cell phone radiation, showing that exposure far below current U.S. legal limits can damage brain development in infant rats.
In the study researchers exposed pregnant rats and their offspring to 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation — a common cell phone frequency — at the “public safety limit” of 0.08 W/kg, the threshold set by international regulators (ICNIRP) for whole-body exposure. This level is 20 times lower than the maximum localised head exposure allowed by U.S. regulators, which is 1.6 W/kg.
Even at this lower threshold, the young rats displayed significant neurological and cellular changes. The study found fewer proliferating brain cells in the hippocampus and cortex, reduced synapse formation, and disrupted brain chemistry. Levels of BDNF, a protein critical for learning and memory, were markedly reduced. Neural stem cells also showed signs of DNA damage, cell death, and a shift away from forming neurons toward glial cells, potentially altering long-term brain development.
Importantly, these damaging effects were observed without major signs of oxidative stress, suggesting that the harm stems primarily from DNA damage and altered cell differentiation pathways.
The findings mirror earlier human data, including studies showing that high levels of wireless EMF exposure more than triple the risk of neurodevelopmental delays in infants. Researchers caution that developing brains appear particularly vulnerable to such exposures, and recommend minimising daily contact with wireless radiation whenever possible.
