After more than two decades of research, a forensic team is set to reveal groundbreaking findings about the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.
Long believed to be a native of Genoa, Italy, Columbus’ true origins have been debated for centuries, with claims ranging from Spain and Portugal to even more far-flung locations like Poland and Scotland.
The team, led by Professor José Antonio Lorente, has confirmed that the remains exhumed from Seville Cathedral belong to Columbus. However, they have yet to conclusively determine his birthplace, with eight possible locations still under investigation.
The results, set to be revealed in an upcoming documentary, promise to revolutionise what we know about the explorer.
The project has relied on DNA analysis from Columbus’ remains, his relatives, and historical figures from regions claiming him as their own.
Advances in technology have allowed the team to narrow the list of possible birthplaces to regions in Spain, Portugal, and Italy.
Speculation includes theories that Columbus was an illegitimate son of Spanish nobility or a Jew hiding his identity to escape persecution.
While the results of this long-anticipated research will be disclosed in the documentary, the full scientific conclusions will be presented later this year, potentially rewriting history.
