Hong Kong police have arrested 11 domestic workers, aged in their 30s and 40s, on suspicion of “child destruction” and illegal abortions after a 39-year-old was found collapsed at her employer’s home with a dead foetus, at least 28 weeks old, hidden in a laundry basket.
The discovery led to suspected abortion pills and the arrest of 10 others in raids from 29 July to 8 August.
Five women have been charged, five are on bail, and one remains in custody.
Police say the case does not involve a crime syndicate but allege one worker imported and sold the pills.
In Hong Kong, abortions over 24 weeks are only legal if the mother’s life is in danger, and supplying or using abortion drugs carries up to seven years in prison.
