Elon Musk says rapid advances in artificial intelligence and robotics could make traditional work largely unnecessary within the next two decades, with jobs becoming more like hobbies than obligations.

Speaking at a US–Saudi investment forum, the Tesla CEO predicted that in “10 to 20 years,” people may choose to work the way someone might casually grow backyard vegetables or play a sport, rather than out of economic need.

Musk also speculated that currency itself could lose relevance in a future dominated by advanced automation.

His optimism is tied to Tesla’s development of its humanoid robot, Optimus, which he claims could transform industries by taking over repetitive or dangerous tasks and eventually becoming a massive global market.

But experts warn Musk’s timeline is wildly optimistic, noting his previous predictions on robotaxis and Mars missions have fallen short. Robotics researchers also emphasize the difficulty and cost of building safe, general-purpose humanoids. Musk’s comments come as businesses worldwide continue cutting jobs while accelerating automation, fuelling debate over what AI-driven economies will look like.

  1. He is at a US – Saudi investment forum. I’m sure he does not mean the average person the street. I wonder what we’ll be doing? Minding our p’s and q’s in a 15 minute city/holding pen?

  2. What Musk forgot to mention is that the Technocrats would control everything, and everyone, globally if his scheme succeeds.
