Rural ratepayers revolt over steep Auckland Council rate hikes

Rural Aucklanders are furious over steep and unexpected rate rises, with some households facing increases of 20% to 72%, far above the 5.8% average rise promoted by Auckland Council.

A Facebook action group has quickly gained traction, accusing council officers of withholding information about the impact of new property revaluations on rural communities.

Ratepayers say they were blindsided by the hikes, which local board members claim the council knew were coming but failed to disclose during consultation.

Auckland Council defends its process, citing timing constraints and legal requirements, while Councillor Greg Sayers has called for a rates cap to protect affected rural residents, according to a report in legacy media.
