At least 10 people were wounded after a gunman opened fire in a busy nightlife district in Tucson, Arizona, in the early hours of Sunday (local time), prompting a rapid response from police.
Authorities said nine members of the public were struck by bullets before a responding Tucson police officer shot the suspected gunman as he allegedly attempted to flee. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to hospital in critical condition, while the nine victims were treated for gunshot wounds, mainly to their arms and legs.
No fatalities were reported and officials said all of the injured were stabilised after receiving emergency treatment. The shooting occurred about 2am on East Congress Street, a popular area lined with bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Tucson Police are separately reviewing the incident. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero described the attack as a senseless act of gun violence and renewed calls for tighter firearm laws, arguing Arizona’s gun regulations require significant reform.
