Health bosses continue to recommend mRNA boosters for ‘vulnerable groups’.
Just over 3.4 million doses of mRNA gene therapy for COVID have expired this year, according to a report today in legacy media. This follows revelations last week that a quarter of a billion dollars worth of COVID testing and PPE equipment had also expired, or was about to.
The expiring product included 1.7 million doses of Novarax, and 1.4 million doses of the original Pfizer jab.
While the report did not state the total monetary loss for the wastage, the original Pfizer ‘vaccine’ of 2021 cost the taxpayer $36 per dose.
Demand for boosters had ‘fallen off’, with Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) confirming just 440,000 people had received their third dose from 1 April.
According to the agency, ‘for those who are already up to date with COVID-19 boosters, the people who are most likely to benefit from another COVID-19 booster in late 2023 include:
- Anyone aged 75 and older
- Māori and Pacific people aged 65 and older
- People aged 30 to 74 with significant complex health needs
- People aged 16 and older who are severely immunocompromised.
Head of the Immunisation Advisory Committee (IMAC), Dr. Nikki Turner told media that there was no recommendation that everyone get ‘vaccinated’.
‘At this stage, we’re not recommending younger and healthy mid-life people have further vaccines… and we’re definitely not recommending healthy children have vaccines, because they develop very good immune responses.’
Mutations meant it was likely an annual booster injection would be recommended, with an updated booster strain likely ‘before winter next year,’ Turner said.
