4.5 magnitude earthquake shakes central NZ

Earthquake 7 February 202 news

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck central New Zealand at 4:33 pm today, centered 10km south of Seddon at a depth of 16km.

The moderate tremor was felt by nearly 900 people from Westport to Auckland.

This follows a stronger 5.3 magnitude quake that rattled the lower North Island on January 29, with over 23,000 reports of shaking.

Residents near the epicenters described the quakes as sudden and intense, with some comparing the jolts to a truck crashing into their homes.

GeoNet continues to monitor seismic activity in the region.
