7.4 quake hits Philippines

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the southern Philippines’ Mindanao region at a depth of 62km, prompting a tsunami alert for coastal areas within 300km.

Residents in central and southern coastal towns were urged to evacuate to higher ground, while Indonesia, Palau, Hawaii, Guam, and other Pacific territories were advised to monitor tsunami warnings.

The quake caused panic and building damage in Davao Oriental, according to local officials. It follows a deadly 6.9-magnitude quake that killed 72 people in Cebu two weeks earlier, underscoring the seismic volatility of the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

Papatea in maori means “gentle sloping” or “flat land”.
    Interesting area.
Just North of Papatea is the Clarence River.

One of ten rivers that come out of the Spenser Mountains.
At least 10 named rivers originate from the Spenser Mountains in New Zealand, forming key tributaries of the Waiau, Clarence, and Buller catchments.
🏔️ Rivers Emerging from the Spenser Mountains.
The Spenser Mountains, straddling the northern edge of the Southern Alps near Lewis Pass, are a vital hydrological source. Their alpine terrain feeds several major rivers:
🌊 Westward Flow (toward the Buller and Grey catchments)
    – Maruia River: Flows northwest into the Buller River system.
    – Alfred River: Tributary of the Maruia.
    – Cann River: Smaller stream feeding into the Maruia basin.
🏞️ Eastward Flow (toward the Clarence catchment)
    – Ada River: Originates near Lake Ada; joins the Waiau River.
    – Christopher River: Feeds into the Ada.
    – Henry River: Another tributary of the Waiau.
    – Anne River: Flows eastward into the Waiau system.
🧭 Southward Flow (toward the Waiau catchment)
    – Waiau Uwha River: One of Canterbury’s major rivers, sourced from the Spenser range.
    – Boyle River: Joins the Waiau near Lewis Pass.
    – Lewis River: A short tributary feeding the Boyle.
The Spenser Mountains a very mystical place.
