Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) senior research fellow Dr Mike Joy has apologised after sparking backlash with a LinkedIn post suggesting dairy industry CEOs should be hanged over nitrate contamination in drinking water.
The comment, referencing New Zealand’s last woman to be executed, Minnie Dean, was labelled “extreme, violent and dangerous” by Federated Farmers.
Initially defending the remark as tongue-in-cheek, Joy later admitted on LinkedIn it was inappropriate and apologised to those offended, acknowledging it did not reflect his or the university’s values.

The board’s composition is now predominantly South Island-based. Alongside Langford (Tasman), the national board includes David Birkett (Leeston), Colin Hurst (South Canterbury), Dean, and Dawkins. The two North Island representatives are Sandra Faulkner (Gisborne) and Mark Hooper (Taranaki).

Good that drinking water quality being detrimentally affected for human use by over intensification of of dairy cow practices (urine) and fertilisers (urea) is now an issue of front most importance.
The intensification is making profits for some but polluting for all.
Nitrates in our water is a serious issue and its time the politicians stopped dragging their feet and did something meaningful about it. I’ve visited rivers near where we have a getaway house and they stink. Dead eels and other aquatic life, floating on the surface. So much for “clean, green, New Zealand”.
