ACT Party criticises incorporation of karakia in Health NZ’s routine

ACT Party leader David Seymour and health spokesperson Todd Stephenson have called for Health NZ Te Whatu Ora to focus solely on patients’ physical wellbeing, leaving spiritual practices to personal time.

The controversy arose after Stephenson criticised the incorporation of karakia into the daily routines of some Health NZ staff, arguing that such practices are inappropriate for a government department and distract from their primary work. Seymour supported this stance saying there was a need for a practical approach to healthcare and advocating for a public sphere where all cultural and religious practices are kept separate from official duties to maintain equality.

In response Health NZ chief executive Margie Apa clarified that while karakia is a resource offered to staff, it is not mandatory. She explained that many teams choose to start their meetings with karakia as a way to foster connection and collaboration, but it is merely one of many resources available ‘to support team-building and patient care.’ Apa stressed that the organization encourages reflection and alignment among team members to enhance patient care, without enforcing any specific cultural or religious practices.
