Some of the biggest names in artificial intelligence are backing calls to curb the rapid development of increasingly capable AI systems amid warnings that the technology could become dangerously difficult to control.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has urged developers to deliberately slow advances at the AI frontier, citing risks ranging from cyberattacks and biological threats to economic upheaval and systems potentially operating beyond human oversight.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported stronger independent scrutiny and the need to better manage the pace of frontier development, while xAI founder Elon Musk endorsed Amodei’s concerns, saying he has long warned about AI dangers. The debate intensified after researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic, alleging that leading laboratories were pursuing self-improving superintelligence without adequate safeguards. Amodei has proposed independent access for safety evaluators, shared industry standards and international coordination, arguing these measures could reduce risks without surrendering US technological leadership.
However, Palantir CEO Alex Karp has opposed slowing development, warning that doing so could hand an advantage to American rivals.
