Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on Australians to reduce their reliance on cars and shift to public transport where possible, as the ongoing global oil crisis continues to drive fuel costs higher and strain supply.
In a rare nationwide broadcast carried across television and radio, Albanese acknowledged the financial pressure households are facing but urged calm, encouraging people to carry on with daily life while being mindful of fuel use. He asked motorists to avoid unnecessary fuel purchases and consider others who rely on driving, particularly those in regional areas and essential industries.
The appeal comes as the government implements emergency measures aimed at easing the burden, including a temporary cut to fuel excise and a broader national fuel strategy agreed with state and territory leaders. Australia is currently operating under the second stage of that plan, with more restrictive steps available if conditions worsen.
Albanese said the government is also working to stabilise supply by boosting domestic fuel availability and securing additional imports through regional trade partnerships. He emphasised that fuel shipments remain on schedule, with current reserves estimated at roughly a month’s supply across key fuel types.
While conceding the months ahead could be challenging, Albanese said the government would act to shield Australians from the worst impacts of the crisis, framing the response as a collective national effort.
The address marks the first time an Australian prime minister has delivered a nationwide broadcast of this kind since the early days of the COVID-19 ‘pandemic’.
