Argentina challenges UK rights to Falklands oil project

itemeditorimage 603e7755ac763

Argentina has launched legal action at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea seeking to halt oil and gas exploration near the Falkland Islands, escalating its dispute with the UK over the islands’ sovereignty.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei has threatened sanctions against companies developing the Sea Lion oilfield, estimated to contain 1.7 billion barrels. The UK maintained the project was lawful while announcing protections for businesses against Argentine economic retaliation.

The two countries went to war over the islands in 1982.
