A High Court jury has found Fitus gang leader Devonte Iakopo and three associates guilty of participating in the murder of Head Hunters member Charles Pongi during a violent confrontation at Pt England’s Taurima Reserve in August 2023.
What began as a proposed one-on-one fistfight between two men escalated into a chaotic gun battle after a convoy of 22 cars, including Fitus and Rebels members, descended on the park. CCTV footage showed a masked man linked to the Head Hunters firing first, injuring two of the defendants’ associates, before George Mahoni, wearing a bulletproof vest, allegedly returned fire with a gun supplied by Iakopo.
The Crown argued the defendants came prepared for violence, citing their superior numbers and decision to bring firearms. Defence lawyers claimed the use of lethal force was justified once shots were fired at them, but prosecutors insisted the encounter was never intended to be fair.
After five days of deliberation, jurors reached majority verdicts against Iakopo, Mahoni, Vili Laungaue and Lika Feterika, while the case against gang associate Vini Mahoni ended in a hung jury. Sentencing has been scheduled for October 30.

Their fist mistake – a confrontation within view of CCTV.
