Hobsonville Point Secondary School in Auckland has cancelled its annual LGBTQ+ event, “Lil Gay Out”, following concerns about potential protest activity.
The event, which typically includes workshops on mental health and sexual education and attracts hundreds of students from across Auckland, was called off after discussions with police.
The school informed students of the decision during a meeting and cited safety and security concerns for students, staff, and visitors as the reason for cancellation.
Police confirmed they had met with the school to assess potential safety needs, but the decision to cancel was made by the school.
