Better Wellington responds to attacks from councillors and legacy media

A union representing NZ Post workers recently refused to deliver a flyer from the advocacy group Better Wellington to local residents.

NZ Post management later instructed employees to begin distributing the flyer starting today. The decision from management followed concerns raised by the union about the content of the flyer, leading to a brief standoff between the two parties.

NZ Post has clarified that its employees should not act as censors, stating that it is “not appropriate for them to determine what is or isn’t delivered.” This directive suggests that workers are expected to comply with their duties and distribute the flyer as instructed. Better Wellington, however, remains skeptical about whether the flyers will indeed be delivered.

The flyer criticised the Wellington City Council, particularly those councillors affiliated with the Labour and Green parties. Better Wellington says that these councillors are attempting to suppress the flyer’s distribution to prevent residents from reading its contents. The group specifically named journalist Justin Wong of legacy media outlet NZ Post, accusing him of failing to contact Better Wellington for comment, a move they describe as lacking journalistic objectivity.

In a post on their website today, Better Wellington says attempts to censor their communication and hinder the distribution of information constitute an attack on the principles of free speech and freedom of information. The group also pointed out that this is not the first time Wellington City Councillors have tried to block the dissemination of certain ideas. Earlier this year, the same councillors were accused of attempting to cancel an event at the Wellington Convention Centre due to being ideologically opposed to the subject matter.

The advocacy group argues that the city is being “crushed” by the agendas of political parties, citing recent decisions on road infrastructure and financial accountability as evidence. They call on Wellington residents to vote for independent candidates in the next election, asserting that party politics should not influence council decisions.

Labour Party councillor Ben McNulty reportedly dismissed opposition to the council’s actions as “racist disinformation,” a characterisation Better Wellington rejects as an attempt to stifle dissent.

  1. “Racist disinformation”. It that the best you can do McNulty? Straight out of the Marxist/communist playbook of deflecting and trying to shut down debate cause you got nothing when truth and reality show up.

  2. ummmmm mcnutty who are you? and who cares what you say but funny how the same dribble continues to spout from ignorant, and dumb I might add, labor party members – jab got ya turning you into a monkey with chippy being your organ grinder! read the room mcnutty. Must I remind you of the PM’s speech about corrupt councils?

  3. A balanced, sensible pamphlet and not before time. $262M on fucking cycle lanes for poncy prats in spandex, utterly wasteful. Time for some independent oversight of these clowns.

People wont even be able to keep their homes soon, especially the elderly. WCC is a DISGRACE.

  4. This is beyond scandalous
A Commissioner needs to be appointed immediately
For the sake of Wellington ratepayers who have been taken hostage
To take back the reins from these incompetent imbeciles
Who it appears are not capable of wiping their own rear ends
No wonder they wanted to sell Council shares in Wellington Airport
To make themselves look good when they are not
Tory Whanau is very quiet during all of this
Or maybe she’s on a bender?
These people need to be put out to pasture
Or better still put under it
I Am honestly shocked by the numbers of gross ineptitude and fiscal irresponsibility displayed in full frontal view here
I had no idea it was this bad no doubt like others when they now receive their mail
Why has the situation been allowed to denigrate to this level of mismanagement?
    Seriously
