Former U.S. President Bill Clinton told the House Oversight Committee he was unaware of Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal conduct as he began a closed-door deposition in New York.
Facing questions in a bipartisan investigation into the late financier and convicted sex trafficker, Clinton stated he “had no idea” about Epstein’s activities and insisted he neither witnessed wrongdoing nor participated in any misconduct. Acknowledging that he might frequently respond with “I don’t recall,” Clinton said he would not speculate about events from more than two decades ago, citing his oath and the limits of memory.
He maintained that had he suspected criminal behaviour, he would have severed ties immediately and reported it, adding that by the time Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea became public, their association had already ended.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said the panel intended to question Clinton about flight records, White House visits, and correspondence referenced in Department of Justice releases, as well as his relationship with Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a federal prison sentence.
Comer noted that some lines of inquiry expanded following Hillary Clinton’s deposition the previous day, during which she deferred multiple questions to her husband, particularly regarding nonprofit initiatives linked to the Clinton Global Initiative and the Clinton Foundation. Clinton defended his wife in his opening remarks, asserting she had no involvement with Epstein and no recollection of meeting him. The former president’s testimony, conducted under oath and behind closed doors, is expected to be transcribed, with video potentially released in the coming days.
