Police are investigating after the body of a person was discovered washed ashore at Mahanga Beach, near Mahia, on Saturday afternoon.
A member of the public located the body about 1pm on 14 February and contacted emergency services.
Senior Constable Tony Maultsaid said specialist officers attended the scene and inquiries are now underway. Formal identification of the person has not yet been completed and Police say the process may take some time given the circumstances.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out in the coming days to assist with determining the cause of death and to support the ongoing investigation. Police say further information will be released once it becomes available.
