Bondi gunmen identified as father and son

Police have confirmed that the two gunmen responsible for the deadly attack at Bondi Beach were a father and his adult son, as investigators continue to examine the motive behind the mass shooting that killed 15 people.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the investigation had progressed overnight and that authorities were no longer searching for additional offenders. He confirmed the shooters were aged 50 and 24, with the older man dying at the scene and the younger remaining in hospital in critical condition.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said the victims of the attack ranged in age from 10 to 87 years old, describing them as innocent people targeted during what should have been a happy community event. He said 42 people remain in hospital with injuries.

Commissioner Lanyon said the older gunman had held a firearms licence for about a decade and was linked to six registered firearms, which police believe were used in the attack.

Two improvised explosive devices were also located near the scene and safely rendered inactive by officers. Search warrants were executed overnight in Bonnyrigg and Campsie in Sydney’s west as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police said there was no prior indication the men were planning an attack and confirmed inquiries were continuing into possible motives. Two police officers injured in the response remain in hospital, while authorities have increased police visibility at places of worship across the state.
