Attorney-General Pam Bondi has announced federal charges against repeat violent offender DeCarlos Brown Jr. following the murder of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian woman who had recently settled in the United States.
Bondi described Zarutska as “a young woman living the American dream,” and condemned the killing as the result of “failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people.”
In a statement on social media, Bondi confirmed she had directed her attorneys to federally prosecute Brown, who has a long history of violent crime. “We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable crime, and he will never again see the light of day as a free man,” she said.
Zarutska, who fled the war in Ukraine in search of safety and opportunity, was murdered last month in a North Carolina train attack. Brown, 34, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors now intend to pursue the harshest sentence possible under federal law.
Bondi’s move underscores growing national debate over violent crime and recidivism, with her office vowing to ensure accountability in a case that has shocked both the U.S. and Ukraine.

Honestly Esther, I felt that way too initially but having re-watched the video it seems like most of them were just in absolute shock at what was happening.
