Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) system is again under intense debate after official findings highlighted hundreds of rapid approvals, including cases where deaths occurred within hours of eligibility being confirmed and one elderly woman received assisted death despite having expressed a wish to withdraw her request the previous day.
Introduced in 2016, the programme has steadily broadened beyond terminal illness and now also applies to some patients whose deaths are not considered imminent, with mental illness eligibility still scheduled for future implementation.
An Ontario review found that in 2023 more than 200 people in the province died within 24 hours of approval, with a significant share proceeding on the same day assessments were completed.
Among the cases examined was a woman in her 80s, identified only as Mrs B, who had suffered severe complications after heart surgery and initially sought assisted dying before later telling a practitioner she wanted to continue hospice and palliative care for religious and personal reasons.
Despite that, a fresh urgent assessment was initiated after her spouse reported caregiver strain, and following multiple evaluations she underwent MAiD later that day.
Another reviewed case involved a cancer patient identified as Mr C, whose condition deteriorated rapidly in hospital; the report stated that despite delirium, staff roused him to confirm consent before the procedure proceeded.
Canada removed its previous 10-day waiting period in 2021 for many eligible applicants, allowing faster access where suffering is deemed ‘intolerable’, while a 90-day assessment period remains for some non-terminal cases, though exceptions apply when loss of decision-making capacity is considered likely.
Nationally, about 16,500 people used MAiD in 2024, carried out by more than 2,200 doctors and nurse practitioners, with a small group of practitioners performing high volumes of procedures.
The programme has also drawn criticism from families such as that of 26-year-old Kiano Vafaeian, whose relatives argued his depression and disability should have led to stronger intervention rather than approval, while broader debate continues over whether mental illness alone should qualify when the postponed expansion is reconsidered in 2027.

I think people die and it’s very sad. Whether someone rots away in a hospital bed at 80 years old or falls asleep at the wheel and drives head on into a truck at 22 is irrelevant. The end of a human life is just as sad and just as terrible either way.
But TAKING a life is very different thing – you can profess all you want that your only concern is easing the victim’s suffering (and that might be the case for YOU), but the simple truth for far too many people is that it’s more about easing THEIR OWN suffering. Grandpa and Grandma become too much admin and too much of a financial strain, and it’s just too hard to deal with.
Western governments viscerally HATE their own citizens, you can feel it in every law they legislate, in every new tax they raise and in every policy they peddle, ESPECIALLY those involving the legalised murder of unwanted babies and unwanted elderly (both of which they do under the guise of “kindness” and with loving smiles). They are demonic. I don’t believe they should have legal impunity to kill people just because their sh!thead kids couldn’t be bothered to face the psychological trauma of a dying parent (a trauma that GENERATIONS of human beings have had to face up to for millennia).
