St. Cuthbert’s College in Epsom, Auckland, was evacuated after a chemical spill occurred in the art department when a shelf holding historic biological specimen jars collapsed, breaking several jars containing formaldehyde.

The Fire Service responded, and the building was cleaned and aired out.

Principal Charlotte Avery assured the safety of staff and students, while impacted students received first aid.

The college is reviewing and removing stored historic specimens to prevent future incidents.
