Nine clergy members have chained themselves together outside Finance Minister Nicola Willis’ electorate office in Johnsonville, Wellington, pledging to fast and remain overnight in protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The group, led by Anglican archdeacon Mel McKenzie, called on the government to impose sanctions, push for an immediate ceasefire, and recognise the state of Palestine, an issue Cabinet may discuss on Monday.
McKenzie said the protest symbolised solidarity with Gaza’s suffering and urged New Zealand leaders to show “moral courage.”
Similar clergy-led protests occurred in Auckland, where five participants were issued trespass notices at National MP Simeon Brown’s office. Police confirmed no arrests were made in either city. Foreign Minister Winston Peters has said the government’s position will be revealed at the UN General Assembly next week.
