Public Service Minister Judith Collins has accused unions of orchestrating a politically motivated strike ahead of Thursday’s nationwide industrial action by teachers and medical staff.
In an open letter, Collins apologised to patients and students but said the strike was a “coordinated attack,” even claiming the Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA) “prioritised Palestine” over student issues in talks with Education Minister Erica Stanford.
The PPTA dismissed that as “a misunderstanding”, saying Palestine was one of four discussion items sent at the ministry’s request.
Medical and public service unions criticised Collins for “playing politics,” arguing the government’s sub-inflation pay offers, staff shortages, and refusal to address systemic problems had provoked the strike. They urged ministers to return to the bargaining table instead of blaming workers.
